Jake Gyllenhaal Opens Up About SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME and Mysterio's Role in the Story

While we patiently wait for the first trailer to drop for Spider-Man: Far From Home, Jake Gyllenhaal recently opened up about the film and Mysterio’s role in the story.

It was a big surprise to learn that Quentin Beck, a.k.a. Mysterio, would not be a villain in this story. Instead, Nick Fury recruits him and Spider-Man to team up to fight the villainous Elementals. While talking with Collider, Gyllenhaal confirmed all of this and offers a few other details.

"It’s basically just about the kids going on a European vacation. We go to London, we go to Prague, we go everywhere. It’s just a really fun thing. There’s a lot of dynamics that go on. A lot of relationship stuff. A lot of cool funny stuff. A lot of fun stunt stuff. The main focus is for him not to be Spider-Man per se, but he gets dragged into it. But you know he reluctantly saves the world again with Mysterio. Mysterio’s a good guy in this, they’re both teaming up to kill the game, to defeat these Elemental monsters."

It sounds to me like Beck is going to be a part of the group who is taking the kids on this European vacation. When talking about how and why Mysterio gets dragged into the action by Nick Fury, the actor said:

"Well there are these threats to the world, the Elemental creatures, and Mysterio is someone who knows about them and who wants to make sure that the world is safe from them, and Nick Fury asks him to come on and help because he’s the only one who really understands them in a way. And he teams up with the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and unfortunately he has to make him become more than just a Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man."

This is a pretty big departure from the comics, and Spider-Man teaming up with Mysterio left a lot of fans scratching their heads. But if this film is set in a different alternate universe, then Marvel can do anything they want with the characters!

A lot of fans are speculating that Avengers: Endgame is going to rip open the multi-verse, which means anything would be possible. Villains can be heroes and heroes can become villains, people will be wearing different kinds of costumes, and… well, things just won’t be the same.

Regardless, I’m super stoked about Spider-Man: Far From Home and can’t wait for that first trailer to drop!

What are your thoughts on how Mysterio is being utilized in this story?
