JAMES BOND Producer Barbara Broccoli Weighs in on Who Should and Shouldn't Be Up For Playing the Next 007

It’s that time again, “the changing of the guards” so to speak in the role of 007. Daniel Craig served as our James Bond for the last several films, and he has officially stepped away from the role for good. So now we speculate as to who should (or shouldn’t) be considered as the next star.

Over the years, many have speculated as to whether James Bond could be played by someone of another race, or another gender. This has been a hotbed of a topic, as people have really strong opinions about whether or not that’s a good idea. But James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli actually does have some say in what will happen next, and she told THR:

"I think it will be a man because I don't think a woman should play James Bond ... I believe in making characters for women and not just having women play men's roles. I don't think there are enough great roles for women, and it's very important to me that we make movies for women about women. He should be British, so British can be any [ethnicity or race]."

I think Bond actually could be played by a woman, and civilization would just continue as we know it, but I do like that her only parameter for the role is that the person be British. I also think we should make more interesting stories about women, but I think the bigger issue is just making interesting, original stories about everyone. The world is full of originality that is both fact and fiction, and yet we have this one spy character that we keep passing down from man to man to make the same movie over and over.

But I know that many people do love the James Bond films. When I watch them, I enjoy them as well. I would just rather go see a movie that surprises me. And for the record, if we are continuing to make 007 movies, I think Idris Elba is the right man for the job.
