James Caan Spills the Beans on Why We Never Saw an ELF 2 - Jon Favreau and Will Ferrell Didn't Get Along
James Caan is an iconic actor that has been in a number of memorable films, including The Godfather and Misery. Another movie he made that has lived on is the 2003 Christmas movie, Elf, which hit big in the box office and has become a Christmas classic that fans continue to enjoy. Caan plays Walter in the movie, Buddy the Elf’s long lost father, and the actor says he would have been open to coming back for a sequel if one ever got moving, but it looks like that is never going to happen, and now we may have a little more info as to why.
In a recent interview with 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, Caan talked about how they were in talks to make a follow-up to the film, but it fell apart:
“We were gonna do it, and I thought ‘Oh my God, I finally have a franchise movie. I can make some money, let my kids do what the hell they want to do.’ The director and Will didn’t get along very well. Will wanted to do it, and he didn’t want the director. He had it in his contract. It was one of those things.”
It’s so crazy to think that Will Ferrell and Jon Favreau didn’t get along! They both have pretty good reputations, and it seems like they would both be a lot of fun to work with. But just because they are both seemingly good guys doesn’t mean that don’t have conflicting styles, and it doesn’t mean they would want to commit to a whole other film together. Favreau has been open to the idea of a sequel in the past, but Ferrell has repeatedly turned the idea down.
It’s too bad, because I think they could make another fun Elf story, but I also think the first film stands alone just fine. Do you wish they were able to come back for an Elf sequel?
