James Cameron Discusses His Biggest Contributions To TERMINATOR: DARK FATE

Last week we got a pretty awesome new trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate that got a lot of fans excited for what it’s going to deliver. One of the reasons why I’m so excited for this movie is because James Cameron was actually involved with its development and the creation of the story. This is the Terminator sequel that he wanted see get made and I just don’t think he would lead the fans astray.

Some fans have been wondering how involved Cameron really was with the project and in a recent interview with Deadline, he discusses his involvement and reveals his biggest contribution to the film:

“I focused on getting the script punched up. I didn’t feel like we went into the shoot with the script exactly where it should have been. There was a lot of momentum on the project, there was a start date, there was a lot of energy and a lot of “go fever” but the script wasn’t where it needed to be so I quietly worked on it in the background and shipping out pages.

"Sometimes I was shipping out pages the day before they shot a scene. I’m not sure that was 100% always helpful, but overall, I kept the characters on track and sounding right and being where they needed to be."

It’s crazy to me how unorganized Hollywood is as they rush into these multi-million dollar film projects that aren’t ready to go when they start shooting. It just seems stupid to rush into production when a project isn’t ready to go. But, at least Cameron realized that and was fixing things as the film was shooting.

Cameron went on to talk about breaking the story for the film and confirms that they’ve come up with a three-film story arc that they hope they get to tell.

“We spent several weeks breaking story and figuring out what type of story we wanted to tell so we would have something to pitch Linda [Hamilton]. We rolled up our sleeves and started to break out the story and when we got a handle on something we looked at it as a three-film arc, so there is a greater there to be told. If we get fortunate enough to make some money with Dark Fate we know exactly where we can go with the subsequent films.”

The whole goal of the film was to start with a blank slate, go back to the basics, and take it back to Terminator 2. It looks to me like Cameron and director Tim Miller are going to deliver a great movie.

Terminator: Dark Fate hits theaters on November 1st, 2019.
