James Cameron Gives Directing Update as He Heads Into Production on AVATAR 4 and 5
It has been sixteen years since James Cameron released his first Avatar film. This year, the third movie in the franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will be released amid the holiday season, and it will mark the third of five films that will encapsulate the full story Cameron set out to tell.
Some fans have speculated as to whether James Cameron will stay on for the remainder of the films, which are some of the largest-scale productions in history, and the director responded to the question of his return in a recent interview with Empire, saying, “I mean, there’s no reason not to. I’m healthy. I’m good to go.”
Cameron will be 77 by the end of production on the fifth film. If he still feels the way he does now, he sees no reason why he couldn’t continue filmmaking. Although, he did say he would consider stepping aside for another director if things changed.
“I’m not going to rule it out. I mean, I’ve got to make it in a vigorous way, to handle the kind of volume and energy of the work for another six or seven years. You know what I mean? I might not be able to do that.”
I think it’s silly to speculate. Composer John Williams is still making movie soundtracks, and he’s 93. Director Martin Scorsese is still making films, and he’s 82. You just never know when your time is up, and you should continue to do the things you love as long as you’re able.
Avatar: Fire and Ash will be released by 20th Century Studios on December 19, 2025. Avatar 4 is scheduled for December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 is expected to arrive on December 19, 2031.
