James Cameron Nerds Out While Announcing AVATAR Comics
Over the past several years, the geek community has grown from an insular community into an increasingly inclusive one, embracing its members' inner weirdness and openly celebrating it at places like conventions around the country. If someone wants to cosplay as an obscure character from a comic, that's great — that's now run-of-the-mill behavior. Geeks have taken over pop culture.
I'm totally cool with all of that. But I have to say that James Cameron looks like a giant freakin' nerd in this new video from EW, in which he announces that he's teaming with Dark Horse Comics to release Avatar comics that take place before, during, and after the events of the original movie. I'm aware that he's addressing the people of New York Comic Con here — probably the audience he thinks will most appreciate this level of detail in a speech — but greeting the audience by speaking the Na'vi language seems so nerdy to me. If I saw a fan of Avatar speaking that language, I wouldn't say anything. That's a totally different thing, and it wouldn't even phase me. But when it comes directly from Cameron, delivered in this specific way, it just sort of makes me roll my eyes a little. Don't feel too bad for him, though: he's reportedly worth around $700 million, so I think he can probably handle it when I poke a little fun at him. (South Park has already done a great job of that.)
Anyway, check out his announcement below, and I'll be interested to hear if comic fans are planning on getting into this series since it's been six years since Avatar was in theaters.
Avatar 2, 3, and 4 are scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively.
