James Cameron Reveals Discussions Are Underway for Another TERMINATOR Movie

After Terminator Genysis and Terminator: Dark Fate were released and saw disappointing box office numbers, I wasn’t sure if we’d ever seen another Terminator movie again. But, it looks like there’s a chance it could happen!

James Cameron recently revealed on the Smartless podcast (via The Playlist) that discussions are underway about him continuing the sci-fi action franchise. Every Terminator film that was made after T2: Judgement Day has been a disappointment. Dark Fate was the best one made since T2, but it was far from perfect. T2 just set such a high bar!

Cameron said on the podcast: “If I were to do another Terminator film and maybe try to launch that franchise again, which is in discussion, but nothing has been decided, I would make it much more about the AI side of it than bad robots gone crazy.”

The AI side of things would certainly make things interesting and offer a very different kind of viewpoint than any of the other films that have been made. He doesn’t go into any other details, but I’d be interested in a Terminator story focused on AI. The killer robots obviously aren’t working anymore.

Cameron recently talked about what he felt the problem was with Dark Fate, saying: “I think what happened is I think the movie could have survived having Linda in it, I think it could have survived having Arnold in it, but when you put Linda and Arnold in it and then, you know, she’s 60 something, he’s 70 something, all of a sudden it wasn’t your Terminator movie, it wasn’t even your dad’s Terminator movie, it was your granddad’s Terminator movie. And we didn’t see that. We loved it, we thought it was cool, you know, that we were making this sort of direct sequel to a movie that came out in 1991. And young movie-going audiences weren’t born. They wouldn’t even have been born for another 10 years.”

What do you think? Would you want to see Cameron make another Terminator movie? If so, would you be interested in a story that focused on the AI side of things?
