James Cameron Says It's a Certainty That an AVATAR Rerelease Will Beat AVENGERS: ENDGAME
James Cameron is really feeling confident about his upcoming Avatar franchise taking back the top spot as the highest-grossing movie of all time. In fact, during a recent interview on USA Today, he says that he believes that an inevitable rerelease of the film will be able to top Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame at the box office… he’s certain of it:
“I think it’s a certainty. But let’s give Endgame their moment and let’s celebrate that people are going to the movie theater.”
The first Avatar film reigned supreme with $2.78 billion worldwide until 2019 when Marvel's Avengers: Endgame pulled ahead with $2.79 billion. Yeah, it’s possible that Avatar could take back the top spot with a rerelease, but then ten years later, Marvel will rerelease Endgame in theater and dethrone it again.
Cameron says he "really enjoyed" Endgame and admires the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But he clearly loves the idea of Avatar taking the top spot again. He went on to say:
"I don’t want to sound snarky after I took the high road (by offering congratulations). But they beat us by one quarter of a percent. I did the math in my head while driving in this morning. I think accountants call that a rounding error."
Yeah, gotta love Cameron! As for the upcoming Avatar sequels, I’m curious to see how Avatar 2 does at the box office. When that movie is released it will show us if there is still a big audience for this franchise after all these years.
The Avatar sequels are slated to hit theaters on December 17, 2021, December 22, 2023, December 19, 2025, and December 17, 2027.
