James Cameron Says That AVATAR Sequels Will Focus on Jake and His Family

Director James Cameron is currently in the process of developing four Avatar sequels. There hasn't been much information on the story these sequels will tell, but in a recent interview with Variety, Cameron reveals that the sequels will be a family saga. He says:

“The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri and their children. It’s more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans.”

I think most of us assumed that Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) would marry Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and that Jake would become the new chief of the tribe. There was also no doubt that they would clash with the humans. As you know, the Star Wars saga centers on the Skywalker family, and it looks like the Sully family is going to be the Skywalker family of the Avatar films.

Avatar 2 is currently scheduled to hit theaters in Christmas 2018, but Cameron says there's a possibility that release date could change... again. He says:

“We haven’t moved that target yet, but we will if we need to. The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern. I want them to be released as close together as possible. If it’s an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we’re able to fulfill on that promise.”

As of right now, the other three films are set for 2020, 2022, and 2023. Cameron obviously isn't rushing things, he's been developing these sequels slowly and steadily for years. There's no doubt that Cameron wants to give us the best films possible, and I hope he ends up giving us something incredible, something that we've never seen before. I can't wait to see what he's cooking up!
