The Future of James Cameron's AVATAR Franchise Will Depend on "How Many People Give a S***"
Director James Cameron is on the cusp of finally releasing his long-awaited sequel to the 2009 blockbuster Avatar. This second film in the franchise, Avatar: The Way of Water, is set to kick off a four-sequel rollout that Cameron has had in the works for some time. As it stands, the second movie is set to come out this December, with each sequel rolling out each subsequent two years. But Cameron says the continuation of the franchise after film three (which is mostly made) is contingent on how this year’s film is received.
In the December 2022 issue of Total Film (on sale November 10), Cameron explains:
"The market could be telling us we're done in three months, or we might be semi-done, meaning: 'Okay, let's complete the story within movie three, and not go on endlessly,' if it's just not profitable ... We're in a different world now than we were when I wrote this stuff, even. It's the one-two punch — the pandemic and streaming. Or, conversely, maybe we'll remind people what going to the theater is all about. This film definitely does that. The question is: how many people give a s*** now?"
It’s a tricky time to be making a comeback with a film you expect to do extremely well in the box office. Post-pandemic, movies aren’t making as big of numbers as they did before. Top Gun: Maverick and the Marvel movies have been the exception, and hopefully they are the start of a trend, but many agree that it’s unlikely we will return to the daily numbers of movie attendance.
Avatar broke box-office records, so it obviously gained a big following of fans, but did Cameron miss his window of a successful sequel? I guess we will find out next month.
