James Cameron Says We Won't Be Seeing Any AVATAR Spin-Off Movies or Series on Disney+
We all know that director James Cameron is known for making large-scale movies that are best seen on the big screen. Films like Aliens, Terminator 2, Titanic, and his Avatar franchise have all been spectacles that have taken movie-making technology to the next level. So would the director ever consider doing something at a smaller scale, perhaps for TV? The short answer is no, at least not right now.
In a recent interview with The LA Times, Cameron talked about his love of the movie-going experience, saying:
“I don’t think it’s ever going to go away, ’cause it’s something specific. The deal we make to go and immerse ourselves without distraction, it’s like doing yoga or taking a walk in the forest for a couple of hours. There’s something about it I still think is sacred.”
That’s why you won’t see Avatar spinoffs on Disney+ anytime soon, not to mention the price tag. He went on to say:
“Right now, the economics don’t make sense to spin off any of our CG main characters onto TV. But the cost of these things will progressively come down as we introduce machine deep learning into the processes and make them more automated. Ask me again in five years.”
I think Cameron has plenty on his plate, and he even has the next several years of his career planned out, between finishing up his Avatar run and other projects he’s interested in. So no need to expand just yet. But maybe years from now, if he’s looking for something, the idea can be revisited.
