James Cameron Shares Encouraging Update on ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL 2 - "I Have Sworn a Blood Oath"
Fans of James Cameron’s and Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel have been waiting a long time to hear something solid about the future of the franchise. At last there’s movement, and it’s coming straight from Cameron himself. If you’ve been hoping for Alita: Battle Angel 2, things are finally looking promising.
In a recent conversation with Empire Magazine, Cameron opened up about where things stand. He didn’t just reaffirm his passion for the world of Alita he made it clear that he and Rodriguez are committed to getting another film off the ground.
“I appreciate the loyalty of the Alita fans,” Cameron said. “Robert Rodriguez and I have sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie. In fact, we’re thinking of an architecture that bridges to a third film, but we’ll be satisfied if we can make one more. And we’re making progress on that.”
For fans worrying that Cameron’s packed schedule might slow things down, he addressed that as well. He’s close to finishing post production on Avatar: Fire and Ash. Once that wraps, he intends to turn his attention back to Alita.
“Now that I have a home in Austin, Texas, about three miles from [Robert’s] place, I think we’ll probably get more serious about that as soon as I wrap the mix here in a few weeks,” Cameron added.
The original 2019 film was based on the Japanese cyberpunk manga and introduced audiences to a world packed with style, heart, and spectacular visuals. Rosa Salazar brought Alita to life as a cyborg trying to recover her identity while navigating a dangerous future.
She was joined by a cast that included Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley, and Keean Johnson.
Rodriguez directed the film from a screenplay by Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis, with Cameron and the late Jon Landau producing. While reviews were mixed, the movie struck a chord with fans and pulled in over $400 million worldwide. Over time it developed a passionate following that has pushed for a continuation ever since.
With Cameron and Rodriguez living near each other and actively discussing story plans, the long awaited sequel finally feels within reach. If the duo can bring their vision for Alita: Battle Angel 2 to life, fans may get not only the continuation they’ve been fighting for but possibly the beginning of a larger arc.
For now, it’s just good to know the creators haven’t forgotten this world and are making real progress. The groundwork is being laid and the excitement is starting to build again.
