James Cameron Talked To Tom Cruise About Shooting a Film in Outer Space

There’s been a lot of talk and speculation about Tom Cruise going to space for the next Mission: Impossible film. Well, it turns out that fifteen years ago, James Cameron actually already approached him about the idea of shooting a film in outer space!

In an interview with Empire, Cameron shared the story of pitching the idea to Cruise and, of course, the actor was up for it!

“I actually talked to [Cruise] about doing a space film in space, about 15 years ago. I had a contract with the Russians in 2000 to go to the International Space Station and shoot a high-end 3D documentary there. And I thought, ‘Shit, man, we should just make a feature.’ I said, ‘Tom, you and I, we’ll get two seats on the Soyuz, but somebody’s gotta train us as engineers.’ Tom said, ‘No problem, I’ll train as an engineer.’ We had some ideas for the story, but it was still conceptual.”

I love that Cruise is like, yeah! sure, “I’ll train as an engineer”. Unfortunately, the film never happened, which is a shame. I would have loved to see Cameron and Cruise make a movie in space on a Space Station! It’s sure a perfect matchup of talent for a project like that!

I’m sure that one day Cruise will finally get to shoot a movie in outer space. It’ll probably have to be without Cameron though, since he’ll probably be making Avatar films for the rest of his life.

I’d love to get some details on what kind of story Cameron and Cruise would have told! Sure, they don’t really need to shoot a film in space with today’s technology, but if you had the opportunity to shoot a movie in space, why wouldn’t you want to do it!?
