James Cameron Talks About AI Threat Saying "I Warned You Guys in 1984"
As people continue to panic about the emerging AI technology and worry about how it will take over the world, Terminator director James Cameron has been talking about it and agrees that it needs to be regulated. I guess if anyone has some interesting thoughts to share on AI, it’s Cameron.
During a recent interview with CTV News, Cameron said that he warned us: “I warned you guys in 1984, and you didn’t listen.” He went on to say that he believes that one day if we don’t regulate AI, we will find ourselves in a nuclear arms race. He said:
“I think that we will get into the equivalent of a nuclear arms race with AI, and if we don’t build it, the other guys are for sure going to build it, and so then it’ll escalate.”
While Cameron believes that AI can take over the world and lead to its destruction, he doesn’t believe that it has the ability to write good stories and scripts. He said:
“I just don’t personally believe that a disembodied mind that’s just regurgitating what other embodied minds have said — about the life that they’ve had, about love, about lying, about fear, about mortality — and just put it all together into a word salad and then regurgitate it … I don’t believe that have something that’s going to move an audience.
“Let’s wait 20 years, and if an AI wins an Oscar for Best Screenplay, I think we’ve got to take them seriously.”
Ya gotta love James Cameron and how he views the world. What do you think about his thoughts on AI? I just want to see what he does with that new Terminator movie he’s looking to make.
