James Cameron Denies Rumored 9-Hour Cut of AVATAR 3 - "I Would Put a Shotgun in My Mouth"
As rumors have been swirling online about the existence of a nine-hour cut of Avatar 3, James Cameron wants you to know that those rumors are not true, and passionately shot them down during an interview with Temple of Geek. The director cut right to the chase, saying:
“By the way, can I just shoot something down right now that has been propagated. There is no nine-hour rough cut [of Avatar 3] … I would put a shotgun in my mouth if I ever did a nine-hour rough cut. No, what I said was its nine hours of material, meaning Avatar 3, Avatar 4, and Avatar 5 — that’s, you know, three hours a movie. Somehow that turned into a nine-hour — can you imagine?”
So, I’d say that’s a hard no to a nine-hour cut of Avatar 3. The rumors of this rough cut of the sequel started last year with a report suggesting that there were nine hours of footage that could be released as a limited series on Disney+.
While Cameron is not making a nine-hour cut of Avatar 3, it’s funny to me that his response to the rumor was, “I would put a shotgun in my mouth if I ever did a nine-hour rough cut,” because the filmmaker has only been working in the Avatar universe since 2006 and he’s still looking to make three to five more Avatar movies! So, in the end, he will have made 14 to 20 hours worth of Avatar movies.
