James Corden Auditioned to Play Samwise in THE LORD OF THE RINGS and Says He Wasn't Good

Director Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings isa masterpiece. From the beautiful cinematography to the perfect casting of the beloved characters, it’s no wonder the trilogy was a box office smash, and has become a classic to the fans. But of course, it took a long time to become the movies that hit the theaters to critical acclaim.

Actor and show host James Corden recently sat down with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, and was asked if the rumors were true that The Lord of the Rings was one of his first major film auditions. “Yeah,” Corden answered, adding that his audition was “not good.”

“Every single person in London auditioned for ‘Lord of the Rings.’ Everybody. I auditioned for Samwise. I was doing it! The accent and everything! ‘Mr Frodo!' Two of my other friends went in, and we all got called back the next day, and then we got called back the next day. And then none of us got called back after that!”

When asked if failing to get the part of Samwise effected his love for the movies, Corden joked, “I enjoyed it until the last one, and then I was sort of like, ‘Oh, ok, I’ve seen this now — I should’ve gone to see Love Actually.”

What a snob! That final movie tied it all together, and was as beautiful and important as the rest. I think he’s just a sore loser. But he went on to star in his share of big screen debuts, including such as Into the Woods, Ocean’s 8, and Cats, the latter being an infamous critical and box office bomb. Corden has been the host of CBS’s The Late Late Show since 2015, and will be wrapping up his hosting duties sometime this year.
