James Gunn Addresses the Henry Cavill Superman Situation, Saying "We Didn't Fire Henry"
Lots of news and clarification are coming out of DC Studios this week, as James Gunn and Peter Safran have released their film and TV slate for the studio. One big question on the minds of fans and press is what exactly went down with the Henry Cavill situation.
Many fans had assumed that when the actor quit his super-popular series, The Witcher, it was because he was returning to DC to play the Man of Steel once again. This would have made sense, as fans have wanted this for a long time, but it didn’t turn out to be the case, and people pointed fingers at Gunn and Safran, as they are the new heads of the studio, coming in to shake things up and reconfigure the DC Universe. But Gunn has clarified that it’s just not true.
At this week’s press conference, Gunn was asked again about the Cavill situation, and Gunn exclaimed:
“We didn’t’ fire Henry. Henry was never cast. He was in a cameo, and that was the end of his story. A lot of people made assumptions which weren’t true, but for me, it’s about who do I want to cast as Superman and who do the filmmakers want to cast.”
Referring to his Superman Legacy movie, Gunn continued:
“For me, for this story, it isn’t Henry. I like Henry. He’s a great guy. I think he’s gotten dicked around by a lot of people, including former regimes of this company. But this Superman isn’t Henry for a number of reasons.”
I think that as annoying as that answer is, because we really would like to see Cavill return, we have to put some faith in Gunn. I enjoy the movies he has made across DC and Marvel, and we owe it to him to see his vision realized before we jump to any criticisms about casting choices. I look forward to seeing what he’s going to make, and I hope to see Cavill in other cool projects in the future.
