James Gunn Clears Up Fan Confusion After "Thumbs Down" Emoji Post Is Mistakenly Tied to SUPERGIRL Trailer

Director and head of DC Studios James Gunn shared a post to his socials a few days ago that had some fans scratching their heads. Apparently none of those fans had seen Project Hail Mary yet, because if they had, they would have understood, but it caused quite a stir that had to be addressed.

Gunn shared a simple thumbs down emoji - referencing the character Rocky from the recently released hit sci-fi film Project Hail Mary, an alien who is unable to give a thumbs up.

The character was at the heart of the story, and anyone who saw the film in the last week and a half picked up what Gunn was laying down. Those who didn’t understand sort of panicked.

Gunn is known for sharing a lot about his own projects on his social media, and the thumbs down post happened to coincide with a new trailer release for the upcoming DC film Supergirl.

While Gunn had a hand in casting the film’s star, Milly Alcock, who debuted in last summer’s Superman, Gunn did not direct Supergirl, and some fans thought maybe the DC boss was unhappy with the upcoming movie.

This seems unlikely to me, as Gunn seemingly wouldn’t diss a DC film he produced and has hyped up for several months, but I also got the Project Hail Mary connection right away.

Gunn publicly cleared up the misunderstanding in a post, where he stated, “Yes it's from Hail Mary as many of you have guessed.” So everyone can rest easy and go back to looking forward to Supergirl, set to hit theaters on June 26th.
