James Gunn Confirms He Will Continue to Produce Movies for Marvel
James Gunn, the wonderful writer and director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, has had quite a year between being fired by Disney, making the upcoming DC Superhero film The Suicide Squad, having producing credits on both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and being re-hired by Disney to come back and direct the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Fans are very relieved to have him back so we can have a cohesive end to our trilogy and the actors can come back to the comfort of the other films and make this one work just as well.
In a recent interview with THR, Gunn was asked if he would like to stick around for the next phases of the MCU as a producer. Gunn replied:
“I will. I mean, I’ll keep producing stuff, you know. I think that at the end of the day, producing something like [Brightburn] — where I really was on set every single day and working with [director] Dave [Yarovesky] and working with Elizabeth [Banks] and trying to make this movie — is a little bit more fulfilling in some ways than what I do with, say Marvel, where I’m giving notes on scripts and helping them out with the character and guiding an overall thing. I think, yeah, I’m a filmmaker, so I like making movies and telling stories.”
So it sounds like he will still be around, but he is also looking to really branch out and make different kinds of movies, probably with smaller, more intimate sets. I’m sure as a filmmaker it would be nice to broaden your horizons that way, and learn all the different ways to make a movie. I respect that. And I’m looking forward to all the projects Gunn has coming our way.
The Suicide Squad hits theaters August 6, 2021, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be out sometime in 2021.
