James Gunn Explains Why He Almost Didn't Choose to Direct GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3

Fans are ecstatic that James Gunn jumped on board to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to finish out his trilogy. He will be the first of Marvel's directors to be involved in making all three films in their specific franchise. But there was a  moment in time where Gunn almost decided to pass on the third Guardians film. But why?

The truth of the matter was, James Gunn really wasn't sure he wanted to make the film without Michael Rooker. Michael Rooker's character Yondu was... well, if you didn't get the hint that there would be spoilers, it's your own fault, Yondu is dead and not returning for Guardians Vol. 3. Gunn and Rooker have worked on other films together and become very close friends and he didn't want to make the movie without him. Gunn had this to say recently in a Facebook Q&A.

"Michael Rooker, for all the crap I give him, is one of my closest friends in the world and the last thing I wanted to do was to make a movie without Michael Rooker in the future. I almost didn't do Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 because there was no Michael Rooker in it and I couldn't see making the movie without him. he means that much to me and I love him that much."

I think it's great that Gunn loves working with Rooker so much, but I am also very glad Gunn is returning for one last Guardians film. I can't think of another director tackling Guardians of the Galaxy with the same edge and comedy that Gunn gives it. Here's to three volumes of Guardians of the Galaxy greatness!
