James Gunn Gives Update On His WALLER Series at DC Starring Viola Davis

Viola Davis has been playing the DC Comic character Amanda Waller for about a decade, even pre-dating James Gunn’s entrance into the DC Universe. She started in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016), and was one of the few Gunn kept on when he remade the film in The Suicide Squad (2021).

She has reprised her role in small, uncredited cameos in both season one of Peacemaker, and the movie Black Adam, both in 2022, and has also voiced Amanda Waller in several episodes of Gunn’s animated series Creature Commandos.

But the plan was always to have a series centered on the character, so what happened to that? We finally have an update!

A few weeks ago, Gunn provided an update while attending the Peacemaker Season 2 red carpet premiere, stating that even though work has begun on the Waller series, several other projects have taken precedence over the series since.

“We’re working on it, but you know some things have moved really fastly and some things not so fast – and that’s been a thing that hasn’t moved so fast. But I can’t wait to see Viola get her Waller outfits on, with her s—– floral dresses and do something special.”

Then this week, Gunn sat down to chat with Charlie Schneider on his Emergency Awesome YouTube channel (via SuperHeroHype), and he explained that the show is still in development. According to Schneider, Gunn said that scripts were still being worked on, and that the series would address a handful of things about the character.

According to Gunn, Schneider noted that the show will follow what Waller has been up to during the events of DC Studios‘ Superman movie, the second season of Peacemaker, and the follow-up to Superman, Man of Tomorrow.

The Superman sequel is due out in summer 2027, so it looks like we will have to wait at least two years for the Waller series, but that makes sense if the show is still in development. Gunn has a busy production schedule as Head of DC, but it’s good to hear that this project hasn’t gone by the wayside. Stay tuned for more DC Studio updates.
