James Gunn Made Sure Danielle Brooks Was Comfortable With PEACEMAKER Season 2’s Shocking Twist

DC fans were hit with one of the wildest moments yet in Peacemaker Season 2 when James Gunn pulled the curtain back on a brutal alternate reality. But, before locking in the controversial twist, Gunn made sure that Danielle Brooks, who plays Adebayo, was fully on board with how the story unfolded.

Episode 6 delivers the gut-punch reveal that the seemingly perfect new universe Christopher Smith has escaped to is actually Earth X, which is a chilling version of reality where the Nazis won World War II.

The horrifying moment lands when multiple bystanders, including Chris’s own brother Keith, turn on Adebayo because she’s Black. Chris also spots an American flag twisted into a symbol of hate with a swastika in the corner, making the truth unmistakable.

Talking about the storyline, Gunn explained the care that went into handling such heavy subject matter. Speaking with GQ, he said:

"Listen, we're dealing with a very sensitive subject. We're dealing with racism and at the same time, there's humor in this episode. And so, you're dealing with something very delicate and yet we're not being delicate about it – but I don't think we're not being delicate in a non-thoughtful way.

“I think we're being thoughtful about it. When I was first writing the episodes and I first finished the episode, I sent it to Danielle Brooks and we had a big conversation. I wanted to make sure she was okay with everything."

The unsettling reveal was one of the most talked-about moments of the season, with many fans theorizing the Earth X twist before it was confirmed.

In fact, Jennifer Holland, who plays Harcourt, had the entire plot guessed to her face during an interview but managed to keep a straight face and not spoil a thing.

For fans of Peacemaker, this twist not only deepens the stakes for Chris and his crew, it also shows Gunn’s willingness to dive into uncomfortable territory while making sure the cast feels protected in the process.
