James Gunn on The Big DC Cameos in PEACEMAKER and How Marvel Helped Shoot Their Scene
If you haven’t watched the season finale of Peacemaker yet, what are you doing here? Get out of here and watch it and then come back!
The end of the first season featured some wild and completely unexpected cameos! Those cameos include Aquaman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, and Superman. They show up after Peacemaker and his team take down the stronghold where the Butterflies are keeping their giant alien bug that provides their food source.
Peacemaker and his team have taken a severe beating and at the end of the battle as they hobble away from their brutal experience they walk by the Justice League heroes, who showed up late to the game. It’s a great little scene that brought some laughs as Peacemaker cracked a joke about Aquaman being an f-ing fish.
What’s cool about this scene is that Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller actually reprised their roles! Superman and Wonder Woman were kept in the shadows. Anyway, it turns out that Marvel actually shot this scene for DC!
In a recent interview with Variety, James Gunn explained that the scene was shot while he was shooting Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3. He explains how the whole cameo scene came about:
"I think before we ever shot the show, we talked to Jason about it.... He was cool. So he was pretty much on board from the beginning. And then Ezra I just found out through some common friends liked my movies a lot. And so I asked if he would come in and shoot this scene, and he kindly agreed to do that. Actually, Marvel shot [Ezra] for us, while we're shooting Guardians Vol. 3."
Gunn went on to explain that the whole reason Marvel obliged to help was because it was payback for help that WB and DC previously gave to Marvel. Gunn explained:
"Marvel owed DC because the Peacemaker crew shot my screen test for Chukwudi [Iwuji] for Guardians Vol. 3. and then we got Ezra with the Guardians Vol. 3 crew.”
It’s pretty cool to see that Marvel and DC have been helping each other out! I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but James Gunn is the bridge that could make DC and Marvel crossover happen one day. Yeah, right.
