James Gunn Reveals GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Spinoff Projects That Marvel Passed On
James Gunn has a great run at Marvel Studios with his three Guardians of the Galaxy movies, all of which were great! During his time there, Gunn was also working on several spinoff projects that Marvel ultimately never produced.
During a recent interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn revealed three of the Guardians spinoffs that were in consideration for development at Marvel.
Those include a show about the Ravagers, a project about Rocket and Groot, and Legendary Star-Lord. When asked about these spinoffs, Gunn said:
“There’s so many. I mean yeah, the Ravagers show, I thought could be a fun thing. Legendary Star-Lord really, frankly, we had a whole idea for that. And then Rocket & Groot….”
Gunn went on to explain that Rocket and Groot eventually became Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, syaing:
“To be honest, Rocket & Groot is what Guardians 3 was. So, I wanted to do Rocket & Groot first, and then I was talked into doing Guardians 3 instead of Rocket & Groot. I knew I needed to tell Rocket’s story.”
Gunn was then asked if he would serve as a producer on any future Guardians projects at Marvel and Gunn said that he was unsure what the legal answer was. However, he did say that the studio and the creative team associated with those projects had his blessing.
He said: “I’m excited for them to go do whatever they want to with Guardians. To take those characters and see more stories with them.”
Gunn also shared that Star-Lord star Chris Pratt reached out for his advice, saying: “Chris has my blessing, they all have my blessing. Chris keeps saying, ‘Is this okay?’ and I’m like dude, whatever, I’m totally okay with whatever you do. You go do it. He is one of my very close friends, and I would love to see him be Star-Lord again.”
We know for a fact that Marvel has plans for Star-Lord, and it will be interesting to see what that turns out to be. Would you have liked to see any of these spinoffs get made?
