James Gunn Reveals the Worst Part About Being a Studio Executive at the Head of DC
Last year, James Gunn and Peter Safran became the leaders of DC Studios, hoping to take the comic book based movie studio to an elevated level, more on par with what Kevin Feige has accomplished over at Marvel. It was a natural fit as Gunn has executed several successful superhero films, both at Marvel and DC. He has a vision, and it lined up with where DC is hoping to go.
Gunn and Safran have already rolled out several titles that will be produced by the studio, including films made by Gunn, but the job isn’t all fun and games.
In a recent interview with Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, Gunn revealed the one thing he doesn't like about being the co-CEO of DC Studios:
"I think that the worst thing about being a studio person is that I never really considered the number of people we were going to need to say no to. 'No, we're not picking up your show, or no, we're not going to, you know, whatever.' It's the freaking worst, and it's not a big part of my job, but it's the worst. You know, because it's always been much more about me. As a director, I've always had to hire people, and I feel like I've said yes to a lot of people. I guess I have to say no because people audition and don't get the gig. And I guess I just always focus more on the yeses than on the noes, and I feel the noes more in my gut now. But I say no every day, and I feel good about it."
He has to make the hard decisions, but at least he has been in the filmmakers’ shoes, and knows how it feels to be at the other end of the table. Gunn is going to make the best decisions for the studio, and the furthering of their greater story. It’s what DC Studios has needed for a long time. I look forward to seeing how the next few years at DC roll out.
