James Gunn Says Both Marvel and DC Let Him Go "Hog Wild" on the Films He Makes
James Gunn is one of the lucky few filmmakers in Hollywood that actually kinda gets to do whatever he wants and is given free rein to do it. Most directors working in the studio system have to deal with studio executive interference, especially from the big studios like Disney and Warner Bros. But Gunn has been able to avoid that with his most recent projects.
During a recent press conference, the filmmaker said that Marvel and DC don’t push any story mandates on him. They pretty much give him the freedom to do whatever he wants. As he puts it, they let hum go “hog wild.” He explained:
"People tend to think that there's a master plan for Marvel. But the truth is, Marvel never asked me to do anything other than, in the first 'Guardians,' to put Thanos in there and to come up with what the Infinity Stones were. Other than that, Marvel has never, ever asked me to do anything, and the same thing has basically been true of DC. There was one thing that maybe I pushed a little too far in the original scripts of 'Peacemaker,' which I pulled back on this much. But other than that, they kind of let me go hog wild."
It’s gotta be nice for Gunn to have such a smooth experience working with Marvel and DC under these conditions. There are so many other filmmakers that have worked with them that I’m sure would not agree, such as Zack Snyder and Edgar Wright, just to name a couple. But not every filmmaker to work with these companies have such smooth sailing, so Gunn should certainly embrace this rare place that he’s found himself in during his career.
