James Gunn Says GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 Will Have Fewer Characters
James Gunn has completed the first draft of the script for Guardians of the Galaxy 2. During a recent Q&A he did via a Periscope stream on Twitter, he talked about the film being more personal and revealed that this next chapter of the story will have fewer characters.
As we saw, Avengers: Age of Ultron included a ton of new characters, and we're going to see even more characters in films such as Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. The studio seems to enjoy throwing lots of characters into these ensemble superhero movies, but it sounds like Gunn is going to do the complete opposite with the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy. He explains:
"People ask for so many characters to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and they ask for so many actors who they want to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but we actually have less characters in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 than we have in Guardians of the Galaxy 1 because everything is just getting too sprawling and too crazy for me in these superhero comic book movies. There’s just too many characters so you can’t concentrate on one and really get to know that character, and I really want to get to know the characters that we know better."
I like that he is planning on taking the film in this direction. It seems like it will be more personal, and I'm excited to get to know these characters in the story a little more. I remember when Joss Whedon was talking about making Age of Ultron a smaller movie than the one the preceded while he was in the early stages of developing it. The movie still ended up being huge, though.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is easily my most anticipated movie of Marvel's third phase, and I have no doubt that Gunn is going to deliver a sequel that will blow away fans.
