James Gunn Says He Begged to Have One Particular Moment in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Included in the Film
James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has come to an end, giving fans the final chapter in their story. It’s been fun to see their evolution as well as their arcs throughout the three main movies, as well as though the Avengers films. While Gunn has always made it clear that he knew he would tell their story in three parts, and he knew the general outline of them, he did make changes along the way, and he’s been talking about them recently as he’s done press for Vol. 3.
The director recently said that he almost killed Gamora off in Vol. 2, but he decided not to, and that made it easier when the Russo Bros. asked if they could take her out in their Avengers: Infinity War - Avengers: Endgame storyline. Gunn says he was fine with that path, as it would work with his own story, but he did insist on the inclusion of one scene in Infinity War that he needed to shoot to pull his characters together.
Gunn told The New York Times of the kiss between Quill and Gamora:
"I begged them to have that kiss in the movie, because it was necessary to really cement their relationship. I had a kiss in Vol. 2 that I cut — it was awesome, but it came in a weird time. At the end of Vol. 2, you establish the fact that they have feelings for each other pretty distinctly, but in "Infinity War," we needed to establish that they were now boyfriend-girlfriend and this was a normal thing for them. It wasn't really about the kiss, it was about showing that they were now a couple."
This makes sense. It was not a big ask, and it needed to be established for the story to make sense with the events that were unfolding.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is in theaters now. Do you like the way the trilogy was wrapped up?
