James Gunn Says He Loves DC Because It's an "Alternate Universe" That Allows Him "True Worldbuilding"
James Gunn is one of the few people who have crossed over from working heavily within the Marvel universe as a writer and director, to working at DC, in the same capacity, as well as now overseeing the entire DC film franchise. Gunn was promoted to head of DC, along with his colleague, Peter Safran, and they are gearing up to bring us a cohesive new lineup of DC films complete with new characters, as well as revamped classics.
Now that Gunn has had a while to settle into his new role of top dog at the company, he is able to compare the ways Marvel and DC are different, and he has some positive things to say about his new home. In a recent interview on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast (via superherohype), Gunn explained:
“One of the things I love about DC, that excites me about DC, is that in a way it’s another alternate history. It is Gotham City and Metropolis and Star City and Bludhaven, and all these different places in this other reality, and it makes it a little bit like Westeros in some ways. I love it in that way. I love that we get to create true worldbuilding in DC, it isn’t just ‘we’re throwing some superheroes on Earth.’ I think right now, that’s one of the key differences.”
Gunn is currently developing Superman: Legacy for the DC Universe, which is set to be released in 2025. The co-CEO, who will write and direct, is in the process of casting. Are you looking forward to what Gunn is planning to bring to the DCU?
