James Gunn Says He'll Be Thoughtful When Casting DC Projects and Will Use New Actors Mixed With Familiar Faces
Fans have been cautiously optimistic about the big change that happened a few months ago, when writer/director/producer James Gunn took over DC Studios. He has already made several announcements, and has gotten right to work in creating plans for the future of the DCEU, hopefully in the same way that Kevin Feige has created a universe for fans of Marvel.
Some fans are skeptical, as DC has famously made more misses than hits, and while Gunn has made many of the movies we love across each of the comic universes, it is yet to be seen what he will roll out. One Twitter user named Kollin Leisinger reached out on the platform to plead with Gunn not to recycle his favorite actors, whom we have already seen in more than one of his projects, to cast the new big projects he has teased for DC, saying:
“please do not encourage #GotG cast to follow you to DCU. Find fresh actors that can craft brilliant characters and forge new memories for audiences, instead of swimming in the same muddy pond. I know I am not alone in feeling this way. Rebirth, not reuse. Please.”
Gunn responded to the Tweet, saying:
“We have hundreds of roles to cast. As I’ve always done, some will be brand new faces, some will be actors I’ve worked with before, & some will be actors you know who I’ve never worked with. What matters most is the actor fits the role & they’re easy to work with.”
While this isn’t a promise of anything, it makes sense that while we may see a few familiar actors, it will open up the opportunity for plenty of newcomers. If he’s looking to build a universe akin to Marvel, there will be tons of characters to cast, and I think Gunn is looking for some trust that he will make the right choices when casting these projects.
I think he has done a good job in the past on the movies he has made, and I enjoy his sense of humor and playfulness along with serious storytelling, so I think he will make a DCEU unlike any attempts that were made in the past.
Either way, I think it’s too early to criticize. Let’s wait and see what he comes up with. It might just surprise us.
