James Gunn Says His Next Film Project May Not Be DC or Marvel Related
Over the past several years, James Gunn has been spending a lot of time playing around in the worlds of Marvel and DC with Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker. He’s currently working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but after he’s done with that, it sounds like he’s going to do something different, something that doesn’t involve Marvel or DC.
During a recent interview with The Playlist, Gunn talked about his next film project, saying: "I'm thinking about what that next movie will be, and is that next movie going to be — first of all, it could be something completely different than [the world of DC]. And I'm excited about Mike De Luca coming in to [Warner Bros.], frankly, because I've known him for a long time and I love Toby [Emmerich], but I've also known De Luca, he's been a friend of mine for many, many years."
Gunn thanked De Luca in the credits of The Suicide Squad, and he would oversee a potential Suicide Squad sequel with co-chair Pamela Abdy.
Gunn went on to tease: "I'm not sure what I'm going to do next because it could be a movie outside of [DC], but it could be a DC movie that has to do with these characters. Does that mean it's the Suicide Squad movie or something else that's within that world or a little bit different than that? And that I'm not exactly sure."
Honestly, I hope Gunn takes a break from the comic book stuff and makes another original film next. He’s got to have an idea for another original story that he wants to tell! I want to see him do that! Whatever he does next, it’s going to happen at Warner Bros.
The only other thing that Gunn is currently 100% committed to is writing and directing Season 2 of Peacemaker. Gunn is also the writer and producer of Coyote vs. Acme for Warner Bros., which is a live-action and animated Looney Tunes spinoff starring John Cena, Will Forte, and Lana Condor.
