James Gunn Says Milly Alcock as Supergirl “Might Be the Best Bit of Casting I’ve Done in My Entire Life”

DC fans are in for something special with Supergirl, and no one seems more confident about it than James Gunn himself. The filmmaker couldn’t hold back his excitement for Milly Alcock’s take on Kara Zor-El, praising her as one of the best casting choices of his career.

During a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Gunn said, “having Alcock play Kara Zor-El might be the best bit of casting I’ve done in my entire life.”

Fans already got a taste of Alcock’s version of Supergirl in Superman, when she stumbled into the Fortress of Solitude after a few drinks, doted on Krypto the Superdog, and then took off just as quickly. That scene set the stage for her solo outing, which Gunn revealed is “being edited right now” ahead of its theatrical release on June 26, 2026.

Gunn has previously described Supergirl as “a big science fiction epic,” which fits perfectly with the ambitious new direction of the DCU. The movie is being directed by Craig Gillespie, known for I, Tonya and Cruella, from a script by Ana Nogueira. The cast also features Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham in supporting roles.

While discussing the film, Gunn didn’t stop at Supergirl. He teased more of what’s coming down the DC pipeline, including an R-rated take on Clayface.

“Clayface is a Batman foe and it is a hardcore, R-rated body horror film, but within the same universe as Superman,” he said.

He also mentioned the upcoming Lanterns series, hinting that a face-off between Green Lantern and Superman is something he’d love to see, saying, “any of the Lanterns” going up against Clark Kent would be “great.”

Between Alcock’s debut as Supergirl, the promise of a full-on sci-fi adventure, and the directions Gunn is taking with projects like Clayface and Lanterns, the DCU is shaping up to be an exciting new era for fans.
