James Gunn Says Rocket Raccoon's MCU Origin is More Horrible Than The Comics and We'll Eventually See It
One of my favorite character in Guardians of the Galaxy is Rocket Raccoon. He's a complex and funny character that is a complete badass. It's no secret that his origin is a dark tale. It's been teased in the movies, but according to James Gunn, we will see Rocket's history brought to life in a future MCU film and according to the director, it is more horrible than what is in the comics.
While speaking at Hasbro HasCon, Gunn had this to say about Rocket's origin:
“As you know, the MCU is one way of processing these characters. 616 is a different one. We are going to learn more about where Rocket comes from in the coming sagas. It’s going to be a little different from the comics. We already know a lot about from where he came from. It’s a little bit more horrible than what it is in the comics when you come down to it. We will learn more about that.”
In case you aren't aren't familiar with Rocket's comic origin, he underwent some brutal experiments. The goal of these experiments was to create an intelligent hybrid animal to look after mentally ill patients in an abanded colony. So we're looking at an origin that's worse than that!
I imagine that Gunn won't dive into Rocket's past until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. I doubt they will tell that origin in either of the upcoming Avengers films. I guess there's also always the chance of a Rocket Raccoon spinoff film. Gunn has considered that option as well.
Regardless, it good to know that one day we'll get to see a story arc for the character that will reveal his dark and depressing history. That should be fun!
