James Gunn Says the DCU Is Building to Something Unexpected and PEACEMAKER Season 2 Holds the Clues

James Gunn’s latest comments about the DCU suggests his long-term plan is more mysterious than anyone realizes. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Gunn revealed that the current DCU has a central narrative thread, and it’s not tied to the obvious characters.

"Yeah, I don't think it's Krypto's story," Gunn joked when asked if Superman’s dog might secretly be the heart of this cinematic universe. "I think I do know whose story it is, and it probably isn't anyone that anyone would ever expect."

That’s not the only revelation. Gunn also teased that the DCU is absolutely leading to a bigger event, but not the one fans have been speculating about.

"It's not what anyone thinks. It's not what anyone would guess," Gunn said. "But I think if people watch the next season of Peacemaker, they'll see where a lot of these things are going, and have a little bit more of a sense of maybe what can happen."

So, that’s interesting. This makes Peacemaker Season 2 even more intriguing. The first trailer already hinted at the existence of another reality and another Peacemaker, likely connected to the previous DCEU.

A new trailer, currently exclusive to theaters, doubles down on that idea suggesting that Peacemaker and his crew will be universe-hopping, potentially replacing their counterparts in the new DCU timeline.

If that’s true, Gunn may be using the HBO Max series as a bridge between old continuity and the new universe. That would make Peacemaker a key puzzle piece in understanding where Gunn and Peter Safran are steering this franchise.

Peacemaker Season 2 premieres August 21 on HBO Max in the U.S., and according to Gunn, if you want to start figuring out the bigger picture of the DCU, this is where you should be looking.
