James Gunn Says WB Offered Him Whatever He Wanted and That THE SUICIDE SQUAD is The Most Fun Film He's Worked On
When Disney initially fired James Gunn from directing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Warner Bros. swooped in to grab him. Not long after the news of Gunn’s firing, it was announced the filmmaker would be writing and directing The Suicide Squad for DC.
Well, when WB approached Gunn, they apparently offered him whatever he wanted to do, and he’s the one that chose to take on Suicide Squad. During a Q&A on an Instagram Story feed, Gunn was asked if he was offered another movie along with The Suicide Squad, and this was his response:
"I was basically offered whatever I wanted. I most wanted to do Squad."
It seems like it was a good choice for him too! In response to another question regarding what the most challenging movie he’s worked on was, the director said that The Suicide Squad is the biggest and most fun movie that he’s worked on so far in his career:
"They're all challenging. Super was physically brutal - so much movie and so little time to shoot it. [Guardians of the Galaxy] Vol. 1 was scary because I didn't know if people would get the vibe. [Guardians of the Galaxy] Vol. 2 was the hardest because of my mental state. [The Suicide] Squad is the most complex and biggest but also the most fun so far. So I guess overall Vol. 2."
It’s good to hear that Gunn is having a blast making his Squad movie. Over the weekend some photos from the set of the film hit social media showing several of the new characters all decked out in their costumes. You can check those out here. They include Nathan Fillion as Blackgaurd, Pete Davidson as Savant, Flula Borg as Javalin, Sean Gunn is in the mo-cap suit as Weasel, Jai Courtney is sporting a new costume for Captain Boomerang, and Mayling Ng as Mongol.
The rest of the cast includes Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag. Other franchise newcomers include Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Storm Reid, Taika Waititi, John Cena, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Flula Borg, Tinashe Kajese, Jennifer Holland, Julio Ruiz, Alice Braga, Steve Agee and Daniela Melchior.
The Suicide Squad is currently set to premiere in theaters on August 6, 2021.
