James Gunn Seemingly Implies His Brother's New DC Character Maxwell Lord Will Not Be a Villainous Take on the Role
Last week, DC boss and filmmaker James Gunn announced that his brother, Sean Gunn has been cast as the DC character Maxwell Lord. Sean Gunn is no stranger to acting, having starred in seven seasons of Gilmore Girls, as well as all of the Guardians of the Galaxy films as Kraglin, and the motion capture body of Rocket, and previously playing the DC character Weasel in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Everyone figured that Sean would appear again in his brother’s projects over at DC, so it’s fun to hear who he will be appearing as.
The character Maxwell Lord was previously portrayed by Pedro Pascal in the DC sequel Wonder Woman 1984, and he was clearly a bad guy, but according to James Gunn, it seems like this new iteration will be a bit more nuanced. He shared in a thread:
He referred to J. M. DeMatteis in the post, who, along with Keith Giffen and Kevin Maguire, created the character for DC Comics in Justice League #1 (May 1987), when Maxwell Lord IV first appeared. Lord, a cunning businessman and self-styled confidence man, had a key role in the establishment of Justice League International.
Numerous years later, in the May 2005 one-shot Countdown to Infinite Crisis, Lord undergoes a malicious turn and shoots Ted Kord in the head. The original creative team has never been fond of this portrayal of Lord, and it appears that Gunn isn't either.
Original Max Lord co-creator J.M. DeMatteis also weighed in on threads, saying:
So we may be seeing a whole new side to the character, whenever it is that he’ll appear. Some sources say he will only be mentioned in the upcoming Superman: Legacy film, setting up his future, and some say he will actually appear. We will see how it all pans out. Are you looking forward to Sean Gunn’s portrayal of Maxwell Lord?
