James Gunn Teases Possible Blue Beetle Appearance in PEACEMAKER Season 2 - "They Just kind of Fit in Very Nicely"
Could we be seeing Blue Beetle pop up in Peacemaker Season 2? DC Studios co-head James Gunn just dropped a curious hint, and while he didn’t give a straight answer, he definitely didn’t shut it down either.
During an interview with IMDb on Instagram, the host mentioned being a huge Blue Beetle fan and said they were hoping to see the hero show up in the new season of Peacemaker.
Gunn's reply was simple but telling: “Well, you know, I won't say you're not in luck.”
Now, he didn't say which Blue Beetle or which season, but that’s enough to fuel speculation. Especially considering what the Blue Beetle movie laid out.
Gunn says there may be a "couple things" that have to be retconned to fit Blue Beetle into the DCU. He told Rotten Tomatoes:
"Peacemaker was always in a weird place. People say he's a part of the DCEU, but he wasn't really. He was a part of this in-between universe of DC when there was nobody really making sure everything was connected, and at a time when they were going to rewrite everything with The Flash.
"We were kind of able to do whatever we wanted. We had that brash ending which I loved. It was one of my favorite things in the whole season, but it just didn't fit in with the DCU."
"And Peacemaker almost - there's hardly anything you need to change for him to slide very easily into the DCU. Same with Blue Beetle. They just kind of fit in very nicely, but maybe we have to retcon a couple of things. But this is the big one."
As fans know, the film introduced Jaime Reyes as the current scarab-bonded hero, but it also confirmed that Ted Kord had previously taken up the mantle before disappearing under strange circumstances.
In the movie’s mid-credits scene, a pre-recorded message from Kord appears on his old computer system, revealing he’s alive and asking for someone to contact his daughter. That moment blew the door wide open for his possible return, and maybe Peacemaker is where it happens.
Peacemaker Season 2 is diving into alternate realities, thanks to the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, a concept ripe for crossovers. This storyline could be the perfect opportunity to bring back Ted Kord, especially if the fan theory about him being trapped in an alternate dimension turns out to be true.
In another interview, Gunn himself acknowledged the transitional state of the DCEU during the development of both Peacemaker and Blue Beetle, saying:
“Peacemaker was always in a weird place. People say he was part of the DCEU but he wasn't really. He was part of this ‘in-between Universe’ of DC when there was nobody really making sure that everything was connected...there's hardly anything else that you need to change for him, he can slide very easily into the DCU, same with Blue Beetle. They just kind of fit in very nicely, we just have to retcon a couple of things.”
Add to that the fact that Gunn is keeping the final three episodes of Peacemaker under wraps, with no advance screeners being sent out, and it’s clear he’s saving something big. Whether that surprise involves Ted Kord, Jaime Reyes, or both, we’ll just have to wait and see.
