James Gunn Confirms He's Writing a Film That Will Continue Superman's Story, But It's Not SUPERMAN 2
James Gunn just dropped a major hint that a Superman sequel is officially in the works, even though he previously suggested we might not get a traditional follow-up.
Now that the marketing push for Superman has wrapped, Gunn took to Threads to share what’s next. When a fan asked what he’s working on, Gunn replied, “Peacemaker press!! And sequel writing!!!”
Naturally, another fan jumped in and asked, “WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO TEASE THE SEQUEL,” to which Gunn answered, “I JUST DID!”
What makes this interesting is that Gunn previously avoided committing to a direct sequel. When asked about Superman 2, he replied, “Define Superman 2.”
Gunn did previously say he was working on a new script for a film where Superman would have a major role, but it wasn’t a direct sequel to Superman. Gunn later clarified: “This is the same movie. Superman has a major role. It’s not Superman 2.”
Gunn was previously asked if he was working on a sequel, and he said, “What I’m working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.”
Until Gunn provides more details, we can only speculate on what this “sequel writing” actually means. But at this point, it sure seems like Superman 2 just flew a little closer to reality.
Coming soon to the DCU, Peacemaker season 2 hits Max in August. On the big screen, Supergirl arrives next year, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. Given her cameo in Superman, there’s a good chance we’ll see Clark Kent again before his official sequel lands.
