James Gunn Wrote the Biggest Action Scene of His Career for Harley Quinn in THE SUICIDE SQUAD
James Gunn has created some amazingly cool action sequences in his career as a director and money of them can be found in his Guardians of the Galaxy films. But, with his upcoming DC film The Suicide Squad, he created one of the biggest action scenes of his career, and it involves Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.
During a recent interview with Associated Press, Gunn talks about working with Margot Robbie and what a joy it’s been to direct her. It’s here where he shares the news about the action sequence, which I can’t wait to see!
“She can do anything. Or I thought she could do anything. And then one day she had to sing and I said, ‘OK, well you can do everything but one thing.’ But she’s such a great actress. She embodies the character. She’s able to do the comedy. She’s able to do the drama. And physically, she is a pure athlete and is able to do these stunts in such a graceful, magnificent, beautiful way. And so I wrote the biggest action scene I’ve ever done all around Harley, and it was so fun to create just on every level from working with the stunt guys all the way through to working with her. It’s probably my favorite four minutes of film I’ve ever shot before.”
That’s exciting to hear! This action scene is his favorite four minutes that he’s ever shot. That’s saying something! That comment alone makes me even more curious and excited to see what this scene entails! I assume that there has to be a shot of this scene in the trailers that have been shared, but… maybe he’s saving it.
Here’s the synopsis for the film:
Welcome to hell — a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.
Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and- destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
The film has previously been described as a 1970s-style war movie. It has also been said that the Suicide Squad team will be heading on a mission to Corto Maltese so that they can recover something from a former German prison and laboratory. Producer Peter Safran previously explained:
"There they have to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory named Jotunheim, where political prisoners were held and experimentations took place."
The Suicide Squad stars Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Steve Agee as King Shark, and Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, Nathan Fillion is T.D.K., Mayling Ng as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Sylvester Stallone providing the voice of King Shark, John Cena is Peacemaker, Joaquín Cosío is Mayor General Mateo Suarez, Pete Davidson is Blackguard, Sean Gunn is Weasel, Jennifer Holland is Emilia Harcourt, and Storm Reid is Bloodsport's daughter, Tyla.
