James Gunn's DC Contract Length Revealed Amid Netflix's Buyout of Warner Bros.
The bombshell announcement that Netflix is buying Warner Bros. and HBO Max has fans reeling with questions about what the future will look like for all the properties under the WB/HBO umbrellas.
A big name in the mix is James Gunn, co-CEO of DC, who has brought DC Studios up to par in a way that fans have been hoping to see for decades. Gunn’s original contract with the studio was signed through 2026, but according to Bloomberg, which got Gunn on the record discussing his desire to put his films in theaters, he and his partner, Peter Safran, now have contracts that run through spring 2027.
But those were signed before this recent acquisition was announced, so it’s fair to assume that there could be some shakeups ahead. The expectation seems to be that once Netflix takes over these studios, movies will still head to theaters, but they won’t stay as long as they would’ve in the past.
This could look like maybe a 30-day release window, which is shorter than big blockbusters are used to seeing. Netflix has been vocal about betting big on the power of streaming, with hopes to bring even more people to subscribe to what Netflix has to offer, including all the big HBO and WB titles.
Gunn may have reservations about the new model moving forward, but it would be in both Gunn’s and Netflix’s best interest to compromise and keep DC on the positive trajectory it’s on now.
If Superman wasn’t enough to keep Gunn in his position, the filmmaker has the projects Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (June 2026), Lanterns (TV, 2026), Clayface (Sept 2026), and Man of Tomorrow (July 2027) all on the horizon, which will probably help cement his place in the future of the studio moving forward.
