James Gunn’s DCU Is Building Toward a JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie, With Two Films and Multiple Shows Planned Each Year

With Superman officially hitting theaters today, the launch of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is in motion, and Gunn and Safran are just getting started.

According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, the long-term goal is leading to a new Justice League film.

The report reveals that Gunn and Safran’s vision for the DCU involves a consistent release schedule of two live-action films and one animated project per year, along with multiple TV series. This is a strategy designed to slowly and steadly bring DC’s most iconic heroes back into the spotlight.

The report says the ultimate objective is “to eventually re-establish all the company’s best known characters, including Batman and Wonder Woman, and unite them in a new Justice League film.”

Gunn’s Superman starring David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane is the official first chapter in what’s being called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. It’s the kickoff, but the map ahead is packed with stops.

We’ve got Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (starring Milly Alcock), Lanterns (an HBO series focused on the Green Lantern Corps), The Brave and the Bold (a new Batman film), and even a Clayface body horror movie.

Since taking the reins at DC Studios in 2022, Gunn and Safran have been upfront about playing the long game. They’ve teased a more interconnected and creatively-driven approach to world-building, steering clear of the chaos that plagued the previous DCEU.

While many of these projects don’t yet have firm release dates or complete casts, the strategy feels a lot more cohesive than the trial-and-error years fans have endured.

For fans who’ve been waiting for DC to finally get its act together… this might be it. One new Superman. One new plan that leads to a Justice League movie.
