John Cena’s The Suicide Squad character Peacemaker was quite an interesting piece of work. I did not like the character, and I think he’s completely unredeemable. But, he was also pretty damn funny and had some great moments in the film. Well, he’s getting his own series now, thanks to director James Gunn, and I’m really curious to see what he’s got planned for the character.

The movie has been described as an action-adventure comedy, and it will “explore the origins of Peacemaker, a man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.” Gunn also explained, that the story involves "black ops combating something catastrophic that's facing the planet."

While we wait for the full trailer for the series to drop at DC FanDome, HBO and DC have released a behind the scenes featurette in which Gunn and Cena talk about the character and pretty much focus on the fact that he’s such an asshole.

Gunn describes the character as “toxic masculinity at its most toxic” and Cena explained that Gunn told him to play the character as a “douchey Captain America who would shoot a kid.” Cena went on to shared:

“He’s socially awkward...something as simple as the uniform hits on the head that this guy’s got validation problems. This man genuinely thinks he’s a hero and wants his Peacemaker logo on everything.”

Gunn helmed the eight-episode series, and it comes to HBO Max in January 2022.
