James Gunn's THE SUICIDE SQUAD Is Getting a PEACEMAKER Spinoff Series with John Cena at HBO Max

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is getting a spinoff series that HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order for. The series is titled Peacemaker, it’s based on the character that John Cena is plying in the film, and yes, Cena is repirising his role for the series.

James Gunn will also write the series and direct multiple episodes, including the pilot. I’ll be honest, I did not see this coming, but Peacemaker must be a hell of a great character if Gunn, Cena, and the studio are this excited to give him his one show!

HBO Max has ordered eight episodes of the show, and it’s described as “an action adventure comedy. The exact plot of the series is being kept under wraps, but it is said it will explore the origins of Peacemaker, a man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.”

Gunn said in a statement:

“’Peacemaker’ is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. I’m excited to expand ‘The Suicide Squad’ and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”

Cena added:

“I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of ‘The Suicide Squad’ and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie. I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for ‘Peacemaker.’ We can’t wait for fans to see this.”

Casey Bloys, chief content officer for HBO and HBO Max, went on to say:

“James Gunn has the unique ability to create an expansive universe while also bringing to life the soul and wit of each character. We look forward to a deep dive into the world of Peacemaker.”

Well, I’ll be looking forward to it as well! Production is slated to begin in early 2021, prior to Gunn starting work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Makes me wonder if Gunn has any other DC films cooking for later on down the road. What do you think about the filmmaker teaming back up with John Cena for a Peacemaker spinoff series?
