James Mangold’s STAR WARS Project DAWN OF THE JEDI Reportedly Dead at Lucasfilm

The future of Star Wars movies continues to shift, and the latest rumor suggests one of the franchise’s most intriguing ideas may have been scrapped. According to a new report, James Mangold’s planned Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi film might no longer be moving forward at Lucasfilm.

The project was originally announced with a lot of excitement during Star Wars Celebration in 2023, but since then updates have been scarce. Now insiders are suggesting the film may be finished before it ever had the chance to get off the ground.

When Kathleen Kennedy revealed several upcoming theatrical projects for the franchise. One of the biggest surprises was Mangold’s movie, which was set to explore the earliest days of the Jedi Order.

The concept alone was pretty fascinating. The story was reportedly set around 25,000 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, diving into the origins of the Force and the very first Jedi.

Mangold was developing the film with writer Beau Willimon, who fans know from the excellent Andor series. The project promised a very different kind of Star Wars story, one that would explore mythology and ancient history rather than familiar characters or timelines.

Despite that exciting premise, the film’s status has looked uncertain for a while.

During her exit interview from Lucasfilm, Kennedy confirmed that development had slowed down even though the script impressed her. She said:

"Jim Mangold and Beau Willimon wrote an incredible script, but it is definitely breaking the mold and it’s on hold. It’s not just my decision, especially when I’ve got a foot out the door. Anything’s a possibility if somebody’s willing to take a risk."

Now industry insider Jeff Sneider has added to the speculation. Speaking on The Hot Mic, he shared what he’s heard about the project’s fate:

"I can’t say that conclusively, but it doesn’t sound good. I think Mangold is focused on that Timothée Chalamet heist movie is what I think. I think Swamp Thing could be after that."

That report lines up with chatter circulating online this week claiming the film is no longer a priority at Lucasfilm. With Dave Filoni now leading the studio, the focus reportedly seems to be shifting away from ancient prequel stories and toward the future of the galaxy after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

It would be a shame if this movie never got made. There’s a great idea here and story to explore. Mangold previously talked about why he was interested in telling a Star Wars story so far removed from the established timeline. For him, the massive time gap offered creative freedom.

"When I talked to some of the Star Wars clerics that keep track of all of these timelines, I was like 'So when would this happen.' And they were like '25,000 years before Episode I,' and I was like 'Oh, I was looking for some distance, but that’s distance.' I’ll do it, I might find Charlton Heston in an abandoned subway station but I’ll do it."

He went on to explain how that distance would allow the film to avoid being weighed down by continuity and references:

"The reality for me is that that feeling of space, no pun intended, was something that I felt was really important not to get away from fan service or the intricacies of what George had set up and dreamed of, but to just have the space to tell a story and not be instantly encumbered with the bases you have to hit."

If the rumor turns out to be true, it would mark another Star Wars movie announcement that never made it to production. Over the past several years Lucasfilm has revealed multiple theatrical projects that later stalled or disappeared completely.

Still, the franchise has several films in development, and the studio clearly wants to figure out the next big direction for Star Wars on the big screen.

The idea of seeing the first Jedi and the earliest days of the Force sounded pretty awesome, so it’s a shame if Dawn of the Jedi really is finished before it even began.

What kind of Star Wars stories would you like to see get made?
