James Marsden Talks Cyclops Return in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY: “These Worlds Are Ready to Collide”

James Marsden is officially suiting back up as Cyclops, and he couldn’t be more excited about stepping back into the role for Marvel Studios’ massive crossover event Avengers: Doomsday.

Marsden first played Scott Summers in Fox’s original X-Men film and went on to reprise the role in X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, and briefly in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

While fans always felt Marsden fit the part, Cyclops was often sidelined in those earlier movies, never quite getting the chance to shine as the X-Men’s field leader. Now, with Marvel pulling mutants into the MCU, that looks like it’s about to change.

On the red carpet at the Emmy Awards, Marsden spoke to Variety about his return and teased just how big this next chapter will be.

“You can feel that it’s something special. The world is ready for this movie and these worlds are ready to collide.”

Marsden won’t be the only familiar face back in action. Alan Cumming is also returning as Nightcrawler, though he admitted he initially thought the call from Marvel was a joke.

“I thought I was being pranked when they asked me to come back as a 60-year-old superhero.”

Marvel is keeping the details of Avengers: Doomsday under wraps, but the rumors are wild and some suggest the Avengers may actually go head-to-head with the X-Men, with Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., pulling the strings behind the conflict.

Whether the X-Men join the Avengers or fight against them, this film will bring these two seperate Marvel universes together is a wild way!

Avengers: Doomsday hit theaters on December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will be be released on December 17, 2027.

It’s been a long road for the X-Men, but if Marsden’s words are any indication, the wait might just be worth it.
