James McAvoy Takes the Lead in Sky’s Gritty Adaptation of MEANTIME
There’s a new crime drama on the way that looks like it’s going to hit hard, and it’s bringing together a killer lineup of talent. Meantime, based on the novel by comedian Frankie Boyle, is being adapted for Sky, with James McAvoy stepping into the chaos at the center of the story.
If you’re into dark character-driven mysteries with a psychological edge, this one’s shaping up to be worth keeping an eye on.
McAvoy leads the series as Felix McAveety, a deeply troubled addict whose life spirals even further when his best friend turns up dead in a Glasgow park.
Things go from bad to worse when Felix becomes the most obvious suspect in the investigation. What follows is a hazy, paranoia-fueled journey as he tries to clear his name while battling his own fractured state of mind.
Backing McAvoy is a strong supporting cast, including Benedict Wong, Mark Bonnar, and Christopher Eccleston. Felix doesn’t go it alone either. He teams up with an aging former Detective Inspector turned crime novelist, played by Josette Simon, along with a wildly unpredictable friend portrayed by Jamie Michie. Together, they navigate a messy, dangerous path toward the truth.
Boyle is adapting his own novel alongside Neil Webster, working under Happy Tramp North and Expectation, with Sky Studios also involved. It’s an interesting move for Boyle, who’s mostly known for his sharp, often brutal comedy, but this project leans fully into dark drama territory.
With a story rooted in addiction, suspicion, and unraveling truth, Meantime has all the ingredients for a gripping watch.
