James Wan Explains Why He Went and Made His Terrifying New Horror Film MALIGNANT
James Wan is diving back into the horror genre and returning to his roots with the upcoming film Malignant, which looks pretty damn nightmarish.
The film follows a woman named Madison, who is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.
This movie looks great, and in a recent interview with Total Film, Wan opened up about why he wanted to go out and make this movie, saying:
"To go back to what is my place of love... it was comforting. I felt like it might be cool to make something under the radar, that’s not based on any IP, an original story. Keep it as low-key as possible and make it really fun. The goal was to go back to my indie horror roots but at the same time, do something that I’ve never done before."
He went on to talk about the inspiration behind the story that he wanted to tell:
"It’s my take on that particular ’80s trope of storytelling where a victim starts seeing through the vision of a killer. There was a period where there were a lot of movies like that, and I’m a big fan of that particular sub-genre. Movies like The Eyes of Laura Mars. I wanted to do my own version, crossed with my love of [Brian] De Palma and [Dario] Argento and [Mario] Bava."
The movie stars Annabelle Wallis as Madison, as well as Jake Abel, George Young, Jacqueline McKenzie, Mckenna Grace, Maddie Hasson, Ingrid Bisu, and Michole Briana White.
Malignant was written by Akela Cooper, from a story by Cooper, James Wan and Ingrid Bisu. Warner Bros. will release the film in theaters nationwide and streaming on HBO Max on September 10th, 2021.
