James Wan Is Pissed Off That AQUAMAN Isn't on the Oscars Best VFX Shortlist

One of the best things about Aquaman was the stunning visual effects. The movie was just beautiful to look at. I think the VFX work is easily the best of the year. So it’s surprising to learn that the film didn’t make the Oscars short list of VFX nominees.

When Wan saw that the movie was not on the list, he praised the film’s visual effects supervisor Kelvin McIlwain and slammed the Academy for not recognizing the film, saying:

“You and your department are the unsung heroes of this film. The fact that your VFX peers in the Academy aren’t recognizing or appreciating what we/you’ve all contributed to the film and cinema is a fucking disgrace.”

It really is, especially considering some of the films that did make this list. The current short list of films in the running for best VFX work includes:

  • Ant-Man the Wasp

  • Avengers: Infinity War

  • Black Panther

  • Christopher Robin

  • First Man

  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

  • Mary Poppins Returns

  • Ready Player One

  • Solo: A Star Wars Story

  • Welcome to Marwen

Not sure why Black Panther made the list. That final fight sequence at the end of the film was filled with terrible VFX work! Even some of the VFX work in Avengers: Infinity War was disappointing. Also, why is Mary Poppins Returns even on this list?!

Yeah, Aquaman deserved to be included, but for one reason or another the Academy snubbed the film. That’s a shame. If I were Wan or any of the VFX team that worked on the film, I’d be pissed off, too!

What do you think about Aquaman not making the VFX cut? Do you think it deserves a nomination over some of these other films?
