James Wan Producing THE NUN, a Spinoff Featuring a CONJURING 2 Character
After he takes a dip in the deep blue sea for Aquaman, director James Wan will return to the world of horror to produce another spin-off of his Conjuring movies. He already has one Annabelle spinoff under his belt and a follow-up slated for 2017, and now THR reports that he'll produce The Nun, based on the demonic character that appears in The Conjuring 2.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but that character design is awesomely creepy. And THR lets us in on a bit of trivia: she initially wasn't going to be in the movie at all. In fact, the character (portrayed by Bonnie Aarons) was an extremely late addition to the film:
The studio and Wan had a cut of the movie, which stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal investigators, in which the antagonist was a demonic figure with horns. The studio was ready to release that version but at the last minute, Wan was struck by a revelation. And so he came up with a new concept, a demon nun, which he pitched to New Line execs. And even though the late-in-the-game change could have spooked some execs, they gave him their blessing.
Looks like that decision worked out well for everyone, because it's become one of the film's iconic characters and the movie is doing very well at the box office so far. The Conjuring 2 co-writer David Leslie Jones will write the screenplay for The Nun, and Wan will produce with Peter Safran (Buried, The Conjuring 1 & 2). Have you seen The Conjuring 2 yet? (Joey loved it.) Do you think The Nun deserves her own movie?
