The feature film adaptation of Boston Teran’s thriller novel God is A Bullet has been in development hell for over a decade, but it’s finally moving forward with Nick Cassavetes (Prisoners of the Ghostland) set to write and direct the film. The director has now started to build his ensemble cast for the project, which includes Jamie Foxx, Maika Monroe (It Follows), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones, The Silencing), January Jones (Mad Men, Spinning Out) and Andrew Dice Clay (A Star is Born).

In the film, “When vice detective Bob Hightower (Coster-Waldau) finds his ex-wife murdered and daughter kidnapped by a satanic cult — Bob is frustrated by bumbling botched official investigations. Bob quits the police force, gets tattoos, and infiltrates the cult to hunt down the charismatic cult leader, Cyruswith the help of the cult’s only female victim escapee, the brilliantly damaged, Case Hardin (Monroe). Bob is lead down the rabbit hole to save his daughter and Case seizes the opportunity to claim back her power from the cult that took so much away from her.”

Cassavetes said in a statement: “I am excited to get God Is A Bullet into production with my friend and producer/financer, Michael Mendelsohn. It’s a magnificent, ultra-dark work that is somehow both intensely frightening and literate, inspired by true events, with the most amazing cast of actors.”

This sounds like it’s going to make for a crazy movie. Here’s a description of the book:

During Christmas week in 1995, a fourteen-year-old girl is kidnapped by a bloodthirsty satanic cult. Bob Hightower, the girl's father and a small-town cop, embarks on a desperate mission to find her but his only hope lies with Case Hardin, an ex-cult member and ex-junkie living in a halfway house in Hollywood. Their quest - his for his child, hers to exorcise her demons - becomes a primal hunt-and-chase through a savage sub-culture of drugs and ritualistic violence. But it is Bob who holds the final card to throw into the macabre 'game', the twentieth enigma of the tarot, the angel who signals Judgement...

God is a Bullet is currently slated to begin production on May 24th.
